BORN 1845 • DIED –
As a yatiri of Puno (a healer and wise woman), Nayra was an expert on the many local legends and folklore found in the Andean highlands of Peru. After making the acquaintance of Jackson Elias during one of his extended research trips in the fall of 1920, Nayra told the author much about the tales of her people, including stories of the dreaded Kharisiri. Being a skeptic, Elias dismissed these anecdotes as mere superstition. Upon returning to Puno in March of 1921, however, Elias and his companions found Nayra’s expertise to be an invaluable resource.
