Joshua Meadham was a wealthy New York industrialist who made his fortune in the burgeoning pharmaceutical industry . In 1912, much to the surprise of his many affluent friends and advisers, Meadham sold his business and funded a charitable organization devoted to providing emergency medical care worldwide . Of particular interest to Meadham was assisting those affected by epidemics, natural disasters, and war.
