Joshua Meadham was a wealthy New York industrialist who made his fortune in the burgeoning pharmaceutical industry. In 1912, much to the surprise of his many affluent friends and advisors, Meadham sold his business in order to fund the Caduceus Foundation, a charitable organization devoted to providing emergency medical care worldwide. Of particular interest to Meadham was assisting those affected by epidemics, natural disasters, and wars.
