BORN 1913 • DIED-
Gary Smith was an extremely paranoid and secretive investigative journalist who rarely divulged any information about himself. At any given time, he claimed to be from New York, Dallas, Vancouver, and even London. His true origins, education, and criminal history were never uncovered with any degree of certainty.
Those who knew Smith generally described his demeanor as “erratic” or “off-kilter,” something evidenced by his apparent fascination with fire, among other strange obsessions.
However, under certain circumstances, Smith was also known to be a level-headed and contributing member of his team. Surprisingly, when faced with difficulty or lacking a plan forward, Smith’s courses of action were often well-reasoned and founded on logic instead of his usual impulsivity.
In January of 1933, at the height of the Great Depression, Smith answered a newspaper advertisement seeking brave and altruistic souls to accompany the Caduceus Foundation—a medical aid organization based in New York—to the jungles of Bolivia. It was there that Smith’s life would change forever.
