The five-story building occupied by Fat Maybelle’s was built in 1893 and was one of the many brownstones that made up much of New York City. The ground floor was occupied by a barely concealed speakeasy while the remaining floors were used as apartments of rather poor quality. The building was owned by Maybelle Hopkins.
Poorly maintained, the whole thing exuded an unwelcoming air.
