BORN 1894 • DIED—
Everyone was most surprised when the artistic and vivacious Mr. Fells volunteered to go to war, especially as he was just starting to make a name for himself in the African-American art world.
After returning from France, the style of his sculptures had changed dramatically, as had he. Becoming increasingly isolated from the world around him, Fells’ forays to Teddy's Saloon were among the few times he interacted with others.
His pieces were lauded by his artistic peers and were sought after by the more avant-garde, well-to-do Harlemites who weren’t concerned by his run-ins with the police (in fact, for some, the added frisson was part of the work’s charm).
Fells, like the other Harlem Hellfigthers, knew Hilton Adams was innocent, but succumbed to the pressure of Capt. Walter Robson to stay out of things.
