The Chaco War, fought between Bolivia and Paraguay from 1932 to 1935, was the bloodiest war South America had seen in the 20th century. The conflict arose over disputes regarding ownership of the northern part of the Gran Chaco region, which was reputed to be rich in oil deposits. It was the first war in South America to use modern weaponry such as machine guns, tanks, airplanes, and other implements of destruction.
At its end, the Chaco War killed an estimated 65,000 Bolivians and 36,000 Paraguayans.
